BREAKING ALL BOX OFFICE RECORDS IN THE HISTORY OF THEATRE...This extraordinary Musical achieves a NEW STANDARD for the Broadway template

LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA's "Hip-Hop History lesson" about the life and times of Alexander Hamilton has taken New York and the World by storm.

How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore, and Scotsman dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished, grow up to be a hero and a scholar? That’s the question that launches Lin-Manuel Miranda’s epic reinvention of the tale of the American founding father, first Secretary of the Treasury, and author of the Federalist Papers, Alexander Hamilton. Surrounding Hamilton, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and more make mischief as they try to navigate the behemoth task of creating a government and founding a country. You’ll never look at America the same way again. Lin-Manuel Miranda Career Timeline: From ‘In the Heights’ to ‘Hamilton’ to Hollywood Hamilton in History: The Factual vs. The Theatrical Hamilton is a musical that has become one of the biggest hits and hottest tickets Broadway has seen in years and has catapulted Miranda, who wrote the book, music, and lyrics, to household name status. Earning a record-breaking 16 Tony Award nominations, the show won 11 trophies, including ones for director Thomas Kail and choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler, Miranda’s longtime collaborators. The musical had its world premiere downtown New York at the Public Theater in 2015 before transferring later that year to the Richard Rodgers Theater, where it’s certain to be playing for a long time. Get your hip-hop history on at Hamilton on Broadway. See the musical that turned theatre upside down — and learn a little something about American history, too.

Lin-Manuel Miranda picked up Ron Chernow’s book Alexander Hamilton before a vacation, and while he was relaxing on the beach, he messaged his collaborator and Hamilton director Thomas Kail that he thought Hamilton’s life would make a good musical.

Miranda initially conceived Hamilton as a record called The Hamilton Mixtape, but Kail encouraged him to make it a musical as it had theatrical scale. Hamilton is not Miranda’s first Broadway hit: He wrote the musical In the Heights, about a small community in New York’s Washington Heights, which won the Tony for Best Musical and earned Miranda a Tony for Best Score. Kail directed and Blankenbuehler choreographed the production, and it also played at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

The show has real cred in the music industry: Questlove and Black Thought of The Roots executive produced the show’s original cast recording. The show is full of homages to other musicals. The lyric “Nobody needs to know” is directly plucked from Jason Robert Brown’s The Last Five Years. George Washington’s like “I’m the model of a modern major general” is from Gilbert and Sullivan’s Pirates of Penzance.
